Darwin, Charles (Darwin)
- (1809-82) From 1842 Darwin lived at Down House, in Downe, Kent, a country
gentleman among his gardens, conservatories, pigeons, and fowls. The practical knowledge
he gained there, especially in variation and interbreeding, proved invaluable. Private
means enabled him to devote himself to science, in spite of continuous ill-health: it was
not realized until after his death that he had suffered from Chagas's disease, which he
had contracted from an insect bite while in South America.

Eye of Fatima (New Girl) - clearly a reference to the band Camper van Beethoven's (shown below) song "Eye of Fatima." Stephan Jenkins was a big fan during their existence and often cites CVB as being a major influence of his work with Third Eye Blind.
However, after further investigation of the "Eye of Fatima" I came across some valuable information that I want to share. What's called the "Eye" of Fatima, should really be called the "Hand" of Fatima. Legend states that the Hand of Fatima wards off "evil eyes". Evil eyes are a product of envy and jealousy. Lady of Fatima is also known as Mary, the mother of God. To prove herself to those she appeared to, Lady of Fatima opened her hands and the sun shone out of them. Even today, many cultures hang the Hand of Fatima drawings or carvings on their front door to ward off all evil. The eye in the center of the hand is that of the third eye - symbolizing a healing power.

Fraudulent means "fake".
Freud (Palm Reader) - Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis.
Georges Seurat (Camouflage) - Famous painter 1859-1891. The richness of Seurat lies not only in the variety of forms, but in the unexpected range of qualities and content within the same work: from the articulated and formed to its ground in the relatively homogeneous dots; an austere construction, yet so much of nature and human life; the cool observer, occupied with his abstruse problems of art, and the common world of the crowds and amusements of Paris with its whimsical, even comic, elements; the exact mind, fanatic about its methods and theories, and the poetic visionary absorbed in contemplating the mysterious light and shadow of a transfigured domain. Read more on Seurat here. Samples of his work:
"Thinking George Seurat...afternoon bathed in light"
God of Wine (GOW) - DIONYSUS, in Greek mythology, god of wine and vegetation, who showed mortals how to cultivate grapevines and make wine. He was good and gentle to those who honored him, but he brought madness and destruction upon those who spurned him or the orgiastic rituals of his cult. According to tradition, Dionysus died each winter and was reborn in the spring. To his followers, this cyclical revival, accompanied by the seasonal renewal of the fruits of the earth, embodied the promise of the resurrection of the dead.

Green stick fracture (Danger) - A green stick fracture refers to the typical bowing of the bone as the bone bends instead of actually breaking apart as seen in adult fractures. Use of this word in the song, one would think the riots got pretty rough and some bones got nearly broken.
Haight Street (Background) - In the 1960s, San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district was a national symbol of the counterculture. The music, the clothes, the drugs, and the lifestyle thrilled a generation of American youth and outraged their parents. Now home to trendy bars, restaurants and shops.
Happenstance (IWY) - A circumstance especially that is due to chance.
Helm (Narcolepsy) - A lever or wheel controlling a train for steering.
Icarus (Blinded) - First, it's important to know who Icarus was. From Greek Mythology: Son of Daedalus who dared to fly too near the sun on wings of feathers and wax. Daedalus had been imprisoned by King Minos of Crete within the walls of his own invention, the Labyrinth. But the great craftsman's genius would not suffer captivity. He made two pairs of wings by adhering feathers to a wooden frame with wax. Giving one pair to his son, he cautioned him that flying too near the sun would cause the wax to melt. But Icarus became ecstatic with the ability to fly and forgot his father's warning. The feathers came loose and Icarus plunged to his death in the sea.
Daedalus helps his son Icarus to start his flight
Secondly, Stephan refers to Icarus not being a "tee shirt or a swan song." We think this is a reference to Led Zeppelin, who had a concert tee shirt with the image of Icarus on the front, in which the image is referred to as "Swan Song." Stephan is in essence saying that he is Icarus.

Lou Reed (HS) - b. Lewis Allen Reed (also Firbank), 2 March 1942, Freeport, Long Island, New York, USA. A member of several high-school bands, Reed made his recording debut with the Shades in 1957. Their 'So Blue' enjoyed brief notoriety when played by influential disc jockey Murray The K, but was lost in the multitude of independent singles released in this period. Having graduated from Syracuse University, Reed took a job as a contract songwriter with Pickwick Records, which specialized in cash-in, exploitative recordings. His many compositions from this era included 'The Ostrich' (1965), a tongue-in-cheek dance song that so impressed the label hierarchy that Reed formed the Primitives to promote it as a single. The group also included a recent acquaintance, John Cale, thus sowing the early seeds of the Velvet Underground. Reed led this outstanding unit between 1966 and 1970, contributing almost all of the material and shaping its ultimate direction. His songs, for the most part, drew on the incisive discipline of R&B, while pointed lyrics displayed an acerbic view of contemporary urban life. Reed's departure left a creative vacuum within the group, yet he too seemed drained of inspiration following the break. He sought employment outside of music and two years passed before Lou Reed was released. Recorded in London with British musicians, including Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman, the set boasted some excellent songs - several of which were intended for the Velvet Underground - but was marred by an indistinct production. Nonetheless, an attendant UK tour with the Tots, a group of New York teenagers, was an artistic success. David Bowie, a long-time Velvets aficionado, oversaw Transformer, which captured a prevailing mood of decadence. Although uneven, it included the classic 'Walk On The Wild Side', a homage to transsexuals and social misfits drawn to artist and film-maker Andy Warhol. This explicit song became a surprise hit, reaching the UK Top 10 and US Top 20 in 1973, but Reed refused to become trapped by the temporary nature of the genre and returned to the dark side of his talents with Berlin. By steering a course through sado-masochism, attempted suicide and nihilism, the artist expunged his new-found commerciality and challenged his audience in a way few contemporaries dared. Yet this period was blighted by self-parody, and while a crack back-up band built around guitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter provided undoubted muscle on the live Rock 'N' Roll Animal, Sally Can't Dance showed an artist bereft of direction and purpose. Having sanctioned a second in-concert set, Reed released the stark Metal Machine Music, an electronic, atonal work spaced over a double album. Savaged by critics upon release, its ill-synchronized oscillations have since been lauded by litist sections of the avant garde fraternity, while others view its release as a work of mischief in which Reed displayed the ultimate riposte to careerist convention. It was followed by the sedate Coney Island Baby, Reed's softest, simplest collection to date, the inherent charm of which was diluted on Rock 'N' Roll Heart, a careless, inconsequential collection that marked an artistic nadir. However, its successor, Street Hassle, displayed a rejuvenated power, resuming the singer's empathy with New York's subcultures. The title track, later revived by Simple Minds, was undeniably impressive, while 'Dirt' and 'I Wanna Be Black' revealed a wryness missing from much of the artist's solo work. Although subsequent releases, The Bells and Growing Up in Public, failed to scale similar heights, they offered a new-found sense of maturity. Reed entered the 80s a stronger, more incisive performer, buoyed by a fruitful association with guitarist Robert Quine, formerly of Richard Hell 's Voidoids. The Blue Mask was another purposeful collection and set a pattern for the punchy, concise material found on Legendary Hearts and Mistrial. However, despite the promise these selections offered, few commentators were prepared for the artistic rebirth found on New York. Here the sound was stripped to the bone, accentuating the rhythmic pulse of compositions that focused on the seedy low-life that Reed excels in chronicling. His lyrics, alternately pessimistic or cynical, reasserted the fire of his best work as the artist regained the power to paint moribund pictures that neither ask, nor receive, pity. New York was a splendid return to form and created considerable interest in his back-catalogue. Songs For 'Drella was a haunting epitaph for Andy Warhol on which Reed collaborated with John Cale, and the downbeat mood carried over to the superb Magic And Loss, an album inspired by the death of legendary songwriter Doc Pomus. Both albums showed another facet of the dramatic regeneration that places this immensely talented artist back at rock's cutting edge. In 1993 Reed joined together with his legendary colleagues for a high-profile Velvet Underground reunion. Although it was short-lived (rumors of old feuds with Cale abounded), Reed has the benefit of being able to fall back on his solo work at any given time. Set The Twilight Reeling saw Reed in a remarkably lighthearted mood, perhaps inspired by a romantic partnership with Laurie Anderson, although he was still capable of causing controversy with the satirical 'Sex With Your Parents (Motherfucker)'. Anderson also appeared as one of several guest singers on a cover version of Reed's 'Perfect Day', released in 1997 to promote BBC Radio and Television. Perfect Night documented a 1996 concert at London's Royal Festival Hall.

being criminals, etc. In the late 50s, and early 60s, the mods came around and they rode
scooters instead of motorcycles and they were more into fashionable Italian suits and thin
ties. It was youth culture.
3eb's "Semi-Charmed Life" video showcases both mods and rockers:
Mood Ring (NLYG) - The Mood Ring is a curious little item. This seemingly innocent, kitschy fashion accessory possesses the mysterious ability to plumb the depths of your soul and predict what mood you're in, or what mood you were in, or what mood you will be in any minute now... or something. We don't understand how it works -- we merely bask in the splendor of its awesome power. Plus, it has that whole Tarantino/Josie and the Pussycats '70s retro-cool thing going for it.
Narcolepsy (Narcolepsy) - Narcolepsy is a serious medical disorder and a key to understanding other sleep disorders.
Narcolepsy is a disabling illness affecting more than 1 in 2,000 Americans. Most individuals with the disorder are not diagnosed and are thus not treated. The disease is principally characterized by a permanent and overwhelming feeling of sleepiness and fatigue. Other symptoms involve abnormalities of dreaming sleep, such as dream-like hallucinations and finding oneself physically weak or paralyzed for a few seconds.
Narcolepsy is a very disabling and underdiagnosed illness: the effect of narcolepsy on its victims is devastating. Studies have shown that even treated narcoleptic patients are often markedly psychosocially impaired in the area of work, leisure, interpersonal relations, and are more prone to accidents. These effects are even more severe than the well-documented deleterious effects of epilepsy when similar criteria are used for comparison.
Nutmeg (AOTM) - Aromatic seed - when ground it used as a spice.
Oblivion (HIGTB) - The condition or instance of forgetting, or being forgotten.
Ozone (10DL) - A naturally occurring trace gas, chemical formula O3. In the stratosphere, it serves to absorb many harmful solar UV rays.
Packing foam (RSS) - Foam is made by mixing a number of chemicals and adding a "gassing agent" that makes bubbles that make the plastic cellular. Flexible foams, such as packing foam, comprise the third category and include Polyethylene foam (what you'd find on the bottom of your sneakers) and flexible polyurethane foam, used in mattresses and Nerf balls.
The most common type of packing foam is widely known as "peanuts",. They are the "S" of "I" shaped little bits of foam that you use to pack boxes.
I have seen a lot
of homeless folks in San Francisco who sleep in boxes with packing foam peanuts
-they are good for holding heat around the body.

Prozac (LAWY) - Fluoxetine (oral) Treats depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating disorders. Belongs to a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
Ricochet (GFY) - A rebounding from a flat surface.
Ritalin (1kJ) - A stimulant medication that is prescribed to 4 million children in America each year. It is used for the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Recently an alarm has sounded. Are there really that many children suffering from ADD? Why has the use of Ritalin doubled in the last five years? Production of the drug is up 700% since 1990 and America is consuming 90% of the Ritalin produced worldwide. I'll tell ya why. Cause we're all a bunch of assholes.
Sequel (Camouflage) - That which follows and forms a continuation.
Siren (GOW) - A dangerously enticing woman. ex. mermaids - sirens of the deep.

Third Eye Blind (meaning of the name) - Stephan Jenkins says that it's "music for a blind time". It also means music for the rest of us, the misfits, who are in some way flawed, but a beautiful person because of that flaw. We're drawn to the music 3eb makes because Stephan sings about issues facing us.
A fan was asked what the name meant to him and he said: "To me, Third Eye Blind means music for the lost. The third eye is supposed to be for spiritual guidance, so maybe it's another way of saying they are lost souls. A lot of their songs deal with being alone, to me its an extension of that. I think what makes it a great name, is that it is such a mystery it allows everyone to draw their own conclusions..."
